CMU students get engaged at winter commencement

Zoe Reddick said yes and left commencement with her degree, a ring and her fiancé, Ian Thomsen.

MT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan University's winter commencement on Saturday had an exciting surprise.

1,808 graduates gathered to celebrate their achievements and receive their diplomas at the graduation ceremony.

One student in particular, Zoe Reddick of Mt. Pleasant, entered the ceremony ready to receive her bachelor's degree in theatre and interpretation.

She had no idea, however, that her special someone would meet her on the stage with a very important question to ask.

Ian Thomsen of Tecumseh, who is currently pursuing his master's in physics at CMU, orchestrated a plan to propose to Reddick at the commencement.

Thomsen called in a favor with CMU President Bob Davies before the ceremony asking for some help with the proposal.

As Davies personally congratulated select soon-to-be graduates from his position on the stage, he asked Reddick's family to join her near the stage.

While her parents made their way up, Thomsen joined them and got down on one knee to propose when they arrived.

Reddick said yes and left commencement with her degree, a ring and a fiancé.
