DETROIT — The Henry Ford Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is celebrating the holiday with custom handmade costumes.

Babies in the NICU are getting into the Halloween spirit, wearing handmade costumes in the theme of the famous children's book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar."

"The Very Hungry NICU" has babies dressed up in crocheted costumes resembling fruits, vegetables and sweets.

The Henry Ford team members encourage families to read to their babies in the NICU, which was the inspiration for this year's costume theme.

The annual Halloween photoshoot in the NICU is a beloved tradition for the staff, families and the public.

Each of the families get to take home their baby's costume as a keepsake memory of their first Halloween when they are released from the hospital.

"Nurses dressed the hospital’s tiniest patients as an apple, a strawberry, a pear, a slice of cherry pie and more—all inspired by the caterpillar’s famous feast," the hospital wrote in a release.
