KENT COUNTY, Mich. — Dozens of kids in Kent County got to go on a very special shopping trip Sunday morning.
The kids were paired with deputies from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office for the annual "Shop with a Sheriff" event.
Deputies said it's one of the best days of the year.
“This is our 23rd year doing this and it's an opportunity for our staff to connect with kids in a nontraditional way. And it's a day that they look forward to every year,” said Chuck DeWitt, undersheriff for the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.
As kids walked through the doors of Meijer, they met their deputy and began the walk through the store.
“Sometimes they arrive in their pajamas with their eyes, maybe half open, but by the time that the shopping day is over, they're their eyes are wide open, you can't get them to stop talking," DeWitt said.
Some kids also arrived ready with a game plan. Others simply browsed the aisles looking for something interesting to catch their eye like a new Barbie doll or a giant stuffed animal.
But toys aren’t the only thing on their wish list. New clothes and shoes are also a priority.
“It's so special, you're able to bring something to a child to a family that just needs a little extra help,” DeWitt said.
After a hug from Santa, it was time to check out and enjoy their new gifts before Christmas.
