WALKER, Michigan — The City of Walker hosted its annual Memorial Day Parade Monday at noon.
The parade began at City Hall on Remembrance Road and traveled about two miles southeast, ending at Walker Village Drive Northwest.
The section of Remembrance Road that includes the parade route was closed from 11:30 a.m. until the parade is finished.
Memorial Day is a day where Americans can honor those who have died in service to their country.
When the holiday was first established shortly after the Civil War it was called Decoration Day and was a time when people would lay flowers on the graves of soldiers who died in battle.
In 1971, the holiday was officially designated as Memorial Day and was set to be recognized on the last Monday in May each year.
