Former Kent County judge Benjamin Logan dies

Former 61st District County judge Benjamin Logan died Monday night.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A long time Kent County Circuit Judge has died.

Former 61st District County Judge Benjamin Logan died Monday night, according to Kent County Commissioner Robert S. Womack.

Logan previously suffered a heart attack while on the bench back in October 2013, and retired a year later.

Logan served as a district court judge since his election in 1988, his previous term would have expired in 2018.

Womack says he was inspired by Logan's success.

"If he could be a Judge then we could be anything we wanted to be, so he was one of those mentors who broke through to me," says Womack.

Grand Rapids Attorney Jon Beason moved to Grand Rapids in 1984 after Logan offered him a job.

"He gave me a desk, a legal pad, a pen, use of a phone, use of his secretary and he was my mentor," says Beason.

Gov. Rick Snyder appointed Michael J. Distel to the post after Logan resigned.

Logan's funeral will be held Thursday, October 4th at Messiah Missionary Baptist Church located at 513 Henry St. SE in Grand Rapids. Family hour begins at 10 a.m. with the funeral services starting at 11 a.m.
