GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Over the summer Grand Rapids partnered with dog training school, 'A Pleasant Dog' to offer free classes at city parks.
They were so popular that now more workshops are being offered through the first week of November.
Those include new sports classes and behavior workshops for things like separation anxiety and ADHD.
“Just because a dog reacts on leash doesn't mean that your future can never include another dog in your family, but just being able to walk through your neighborhood confidently, I think, is a major improvement in quality of life for everybody," Jen Gavin, A Pleasant Dog Founder and Head Trainer, said.
You have to register in advance, so hurry because they fill up quickly.
Training is a valuable resource that can keep families together and out of a shelter.
Utilizing treats, toys, and praise when they see something uncomfortable like another dog walking across the street to teach them a new behavior.
“If a dog can't eat in the environment, they can't learn. So if you're ever in a situation where your dog can't take food when they see another dog, this might sound cowardly, but the best thing you can do is actually move away, run away, because putting distance between you and something scary is functionally reinforcing to your dog," Gavin said.
There are about 10 new courses being offered by the city and A Pleasant Dog.
