Dozens of Michigan animal shelters to offer free pet adoption Saturday

Before you head to adopt a new pet, make sure your adoption paperwork has been approved — that will make the process much quicker.

Hundreds of animals across several dozen animal shelters in Michigan will be up for adoption free of charge Saturday, once again thanks to "Empty the Shelters," an adoption event sponsored by the BISSELL Pet Foundation.

During the event, BISSELL Pet Foundation pays for all adoption fees — except for puppies — and each adoption includes a leash, cleaning supplies, toys and treats. Usually, a dog adoption costs $150 and $60 for a cat.

"Empty the Shelters" will take place during regular business hours Saturday. But before you head to adopt a new pet, make sure your adoption paperwork has been approved — that will make the process much quicker, according to Charlevoix Area Humane Society.

The foundation is hoping to top last year's record this year. Last year, more than 2,000 animals found new homes across Michigan.

Empty the Shelters will take place nationally this weekend: Across 14 states and at more than 100 animal shelters. A list of all participating Midwest shelters can be found here.
