GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Looking for a new furry friend this holiday season? Empty the Shelters is kicking off on Dec. 1 with the goal of getting more pets into homes for the holidays.
During Empty the Shelters, adoption fees are lowered to $50 or less. All animals are microchipped, spayed or neutered and fully vaccinated.
This event comes as animal shelters across the U.S. are nearing full capacity.
"Our nation's animal shelters need your help as they face an overcrowding crisis unlike anything we have experienced in more than a decade. The devastating increase in owner surrenders and stray intakes has left tens of thousands of deserving pets desperate to find a home," said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation.
Over 40 animal shelters in Michigan are participating. In West Michigan, the following will be holding discounted adoption fees:
- Al-Van Humane Society in South Haven
- Big Lake Humane Society (Muskegon Humane Society) in Muskegon
- Harbor Humane Society in West Olive
- Heaven Can Wait Animal Haven in Norton Shores
- Humane Society of West Michigan in Walker
- Ionia County Animal Shelter in Ionia
- Kent County Animal Shelter in Grand Rapids
- West Michigan SPCA Dba Faithful to Felines in Muskegon
- Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance in Allegan
Empty the Shelters was started in 2011 and has helped over 200,000 animals find their forever homes. Empty the Shelters runs from Dec. 1 to Dec. 17. For more information and to see a full list of participating shelters, click here.
