KENT COUNTY, Mich. — The Kent County Animal Shelter is asking for help from anyone interested in adopting or fostering an animal.

The animal shelter is preparing to move to a temporary location while its primary building is renovated. The shelter is expected to move on Jan. 21 to the new location less than a mile from its current home where renovations are expected to be completed in mid-March.

The new location will focus on processing adoptions, intakes and animal reclaims, but will see reduced kennel capacity by almost half due to space constraints. Feline housing capacity is also going to be reduced with the move.

That's why the Kent County Animal Shelter is urging for people in the area to step up and adopt a pet or become a foster family.

The shelter warns that while strays will still be accepted at this new temporary location, owned animal intake will be limited. They are asking residents to be prepared for pet emergencies during this time and suggesting to explore alternative resources.

"We will remain committed to our policy to not euthanize healthy adoptable animals for space or length of stay, but we will need the help of the community to achieve this," Director of the Kent County Animal Shelter Angela Hollinshead wrote in a letter to community members.

If you are interested in fostering an animal from the shelter, you can sign up and learn more about what fostering entails here.

If you are interested in adoption, you can find a full list of adoptable pets here.
