WALKER, Mich — A West Michigan boy is being called a hero after knowing what to do when his dad needed help.
Bobby Steward was having an asthma attack back in October and lost consciousness when his 6-year-old son Chance came to the rescue.
Bobby opened the door for a breath of fresh air and immediately lost consciousness and fell on the front porch.
He told his son to call 911 and Chance did just that. While Chance wasn't able to tell dispatchers much, first responders were able to ping the location and send medical personnel to help.
"He didn't talk much," said mother Kayla Steward. "He did call but he can stay kind of silent on the line."
Kayla said she didn't even know Chance knew the name of their street, as they're fairly new to the area.
Not every 6-year-old knows how to call 911, so Walker police awarded Chance with a Citizen Life Saving Award this week.
"Absolutely impressive for a 6-year-old to not only know how to dial 911, but know some of the information to give and be prepared to answer some of those questions," said Officer Mitch Harkema with Walker Police Department.
Walker police invited Chance and his family to the fire station for some pizza and a tour of the building and even gave him a police car LEGO.
Bobby is now doing well and has not had an asthma attack since.
Walker police said this serves as a good reminder to make sure parents are talking with their kids and teaching them their address, street name and phone number in case they ever have to help in an emergency.
