GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- April is Move More Month which is important for overall heart heath.
Staying active is important when it comes to improving not only how you look, but how you feel. However, only 52-percent of Michigan adults are getting the recommended amount of aerobic physical activity, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports.
This April, the American Heart Association is celebrating Move More Month and TerryBerry has launched the Workplace Walking Challenge, to get people up and moving in Michigan.
The 13 On Your Side Weekend Morning News Team got a chance to hear from Cindy Bouma, the communications director at the Midwest affiliate of American Heart Association and Jen Whelply, a Wellness Committee member for TerryBerry, to learn all about what we can do to move more and get rewarded for it.
The Workplace Walking Challenge was created by TerryBerry. It's a 6-week competition between "wellness-minded organizations" that happens in both Arizona and West Michigan. Employers work to encourage employees to get active. Groups earn awards for having the best participation rate and the greatest average number of steps per employee. Last year 50 organizations took part, they are hoping to double that number this year.
