GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — West Michigan has been experiencing an unseasonably warm February. Tuesday's temps were even over 70°! Weather like that can be perfect for enjoying an ice cream cone.
However, most ice cream shops across West Michigan are still closed for the winter.
The Dairy Queen located on Walker Avenue decided to remedy the situation. The shop will be opening for the season at 1 p.m. on Thursday, leap day.
One of the managers at the shop, Alysa Grear, said they've been prepping to open for weeks.
"We're super excited," said Grear. "We got lucky with the weather."
Grear said the shop had initially planned to open in early March, but the warm weather made them move that date up.
The shop is a popular spot, especially on the weekends according to Grear. However, she said they are set to be fully stocked and ready on Thursday for the crowds.
The Walker Dairy Queen is under new ownership this year. The previous owners sold the location after 65 years.
One of the shop's new owners, Kaitlin Franklin, is familiar with the shop though. She worked there for 14 years before buying it last summer along with her friend Jessie Barwin, the previous owner's daughter.
