Try It Before You Buy It: Hidden Camera Detector

We test out if you can detect hidden cameras with a handheld device.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Do you feel like you’re being watched? Are you not feeling safe in your hotel room?

The Hidden Camera Detector we found on Amazon promises to find hidden cameras that could be lurking around your house or hotel rooms. But does it work?

Let’s try it!

The Hidden Camera Detector comes nicely packaged in a box and includes a strap and a tiny charging cable that requires a plug end. There are three buttons on it, one for a flashlight, one for the camera detector and another for motion sensing. After charging it for a few hours, we got to testing.

First up, we looked for a camera in our kitchen. To operate the device, you turn it on, and it will start flashing red led lights. You hold the viewfinder up to your eye, and these lights will reflect off any camera lens in the area. And sure enough, it found the one lurking in the corner. It was easy to spot looking through the scope and see the red dot. Next, we went to the other cameras out in the open. And every little security camera we tested the device with showed the same red dot, outside and inside cameras, even in the daylight.

The device also comes with a little mini flashlight. It might be helpful in a pinch but it isn’t very bright. You’d be better off using a cellphone light.

The third feature it has is an alarm. You are supposed to be able to put it on a door knob, and it will alert you if it senses movement. The only issue is setting it up took multiple tries as it kept going off before we removed our hand.

Overall we were impressed by the ability of the Hidden Camera Detector to detect cameras.

Now, the results.

The positives:

  • Compact and easy to carry
  • Worked well at seeing our cameras
  • Felt solid and not cheap

The negatives:

  • The motion alarm feature is too sensitive
  • The pocket light isn’t that bright

At only $17 on Amazon, it’s not a wallet breaker, so if you’re in the market for a camera detector, we rate this as a "Buy It."
