Try It Before You Buy It: Magic Ice Scraper

Can a cone-shaped ice scraper really do a better job than the standard handheld style we all know?

Do icy windshields give you the chills?

Looking for an easier way to clear the ice off?

The magic ice scraper claims to be an easy compact solution for clearing ice and snow from your car, but does it work?

We Try It Before You Buy It!

The Magic Ice Scraper is a super simple design. It’s just a plastic cone with a little top piece to chop up big chunks of ice. It claims to be safe for your windshield and car. But looking at its design we won’t be sacrificing our clear coat with it.

For this, we are comparing it with a standard brush and scraper for this Try It. The first thing you will notice is you will need a snow brush no matter what. The cone isn’t built to remove large layers of snow, it's too small. So we cleaned the car off, leaving the ice on the windshield to be removed.

It took a few circles to get it started, but it worked well to remove the ice once we got it to go. We found doing it in a circular pattern worked better than using long strokes like a traditional scraper. Since we are testing this on an SUV, we found it hard to reach the center of the windshield, since you are limited to how far your hand reaches.

We then used the scraper on the snow brush, and they were equal in their ability to scrape the ice off, but the brush has the advantage of reach, plus a brush to remove the snow.

We decided to try it on a smaller car, but we still had to brush the snow off first. Both the cone and the scraper did the same job, and it was still a stretch to reach the middle of the windshield. We noticed that the cone made our hands feel a little more fatigued. Plus, the top part kept popping off. We did test out chopping at the ice with it, and it made no difference.

Now, the results:

The positives

  • It removed ice like a traditional scraper
  • It’s compact

And the negatives

  • Limited by your reach on the windshield
  • You still need a snow brush, since any kind of deep snow is too much to clear with this
  • Questionable durability, the plastic is thin compared to other scrapers

If you own a dedicated snow brush and are looking for a different ice scraper, this might work for you, but if you can’t reach the middle of your windshield, then you might want to pass. Because this is limited in its use, even though it worked at removing ice, we rate this as a “consider it.”
