BELMONT, Mich. (WZZM)-- A number of viewers have been asking about the Eggstractor. It's a contraption that's supposed to peel boiled eggs 10 times faster than by hand.
I took it to Jen, The Ginger Chef, www.jenthegingerchef.com to help me put it to the test. Jen says everyone has their own way of peeling hard boiled eggs. She was curious if the Eggstractor would be any faster.
It's just a white plastic stand, with a sort of plunger-like device that goes over top of the egg. The makers claim at the tip of every egg there is a small chamber of air called the Air Cell. Inside the Eggstractor, pressure forces air from the Air Cell and causes the shell to separate from the egg. The egg is supposed to pop out, perfectly de-shelled.
Jen and I both tried it several times. You're supposed tap the small end of the egg several times on a piercing feature on the Eggstractor. You have to pierce through the inner layer of skin. Then you tap on the fat end of the egg a couple of times on the counter or table. Then place the small end of the egg facing up in the base, and the Eggstractor over top and simply push down hard.
But, it didn't work after several pushes. The directions tell you to realign the egg to the upright position before trying again. We pushed and pushed and it was hard to get the egg to pop out. When it finally did, we did NOT have a perfectly peeled egg.
Several times the egg was only 2/3 peeled, or it looked like it exploded with the yolk popping right out. Often times the eggs top popped off, unpeeled and overall, it just made a mess.
It was hard to push down, and I just don't think it's a fool-proof product. Too many things can go wrong and it wasn't as easy as the commercials make it look, at all.
We ended up buying it online because we did not find it locally. It advertises for $14.99, but of course there are shipping costs and they sent us an extra one that we had to pay extra shipping for. Keep that in mind.
