WALKER, Mich. — A manufacturing facility in Kent County is moving its operations out of state and laying off over 100 workers over the next several months.

Between April and August of this year, Tubelite in Walker lay off 106 employees as it winds down operations in Michigan.

Parent company Apogee Enterprises announced the move out of state in a release last month. The company's decision to move the operations comes as part of its strategic plan named "Project Fortify."

“Project Fortify will further improve our cost structure, enhance organizational efficiency, and enable our team to focus on higher growth, higher margin opportunities,” said Ty R. Silberhorn, Chief Executive Officer of Apogee.

Apogee outlined the lay offs in a letter to Michigan's Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. The letter shared a timeline of when the lay offs would occur over four phases:

  • April 21: 32 lay offs
  • May 31: 68 lay offs
  • Aug. 2: 5 lay offs
  • Aug. 30: 1 lay off

The lay offs at Tubelite in Walker are part of an estimated reduction of 250 employees across the Apogee Enterprise's workforce.

Tubelite is a supplier of storefronts and entrances and has been in business in Kent County since 1945, according to the company's website.
