GRAND RAPIDS, Mich - Every year, grills account for an average of 8,900 home fires and $118 million in overall property damage costs. Joe Sejat from PuroClean joined 13 On Your Side with some tips to avoid a grilling disaster.
- Follow the 10 foot rule: All grills should be kept at least 10 feet away from any house or structure.
- Clean your grill: Grease and fat buildup are major sources of flare-ups. Removing them regularly will minimize fire risks.
- Maintain your grill: Relatively inexpensive maintenance, such as checking for leaks on your gas grill, can go a long way towards preventing costly fire damage.
- Be ready to extinguish a fire: Make sure you’re prepared to deal with unexpected flames. If you don’t have a fire extinguisher, be sure to keep baking soda or sand nearby to put out minor flare-ups.
- Supervise your grill: Fire is said to double in size every minute, so check on it frequently!
- Don’t turn on the gas with the lid closed: This is one of the most common sources of grilling injuries because a closed lid causes gas to build up inside the grill, turning it into a fireball.
