MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) -- A 200,000 ton pile of road salt in Muskegon is shrinking and could be gone by next week. The salt pile at the Verplank dock on Muskegon Lake is visible from Shoreline Drive. This fall the pile covered a space the size of 20 football fields at a heights of 50 feet.

The salt piles at the Verplank dock are owned by Morton Salt and the North American Salt company. It's trucked everyday to road commissions around west Michigan.

The road salt arrived in Muskegon by freighter. The pile may only last another week. It's a sign road commissions will need to be cautious with the amount of salt used to finish the winter.
