Possession and “reasonable use’’ of a stun gun would be legal in Michigan for anyone 21 years of age or older, under legislation introduced this week.
Proponents say stun guns are a viable, non-lethal form of self-protection.
“I was shocked to find out they aren't permitted,’’ said Rep. Michele Hoitenga, who sponsored the bill. “I carry a gun for self-protection, but a lot of women don’t want to carry a gun. This offers another form of protection.’’
Stun guns are different than Tasers and require direct contact with a person to be effective, said Hoitenga, R-Manton. High-voltage electricity is used to momentarily stop the attacker, she explained.
Gov. Rick Snyder in 2012 signed legislation allowing Michigan residents with a concealed pistol license and proper training to carry a Taser for self-protection. A Taser shoots out two metal probe darts a distance of about 15 feet and relies on electrical current to disrupt muscle control.
The five-page bill introduced Thursday has been referred to the House Committee on Judiciary.
