Behind the scenes look into the 'Best Fireworks Show in West Michigan'

The Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival Fireworks show is one of the most popular in West Michigan. Learn more about the work that goes into the stunning show.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- Some say it's the best fireworks show in West Michigan - the Coast Guard fireworks extravaganza certainly wraps up the week-long festivities with a bang.

"A good fireworks show is one where you can feel the concussion and smell the gunpowder," said Roger Jonas.

Roger Jonas, chairman of the fireworks show, has been coordinating the show for nearly fifteen years. He says one of the things that makes the show so spectacular is the venue.

"We can shoot off the fountain level, we can shoot off the beach," sadi Jonas. "We can even shoot them off the river which is really a cool effect."

The music selection is Jonas' specialty. He selects music from different genres, appealing to all audiences. The Grand Haven musical fountain is also wrapped into the 20 minute show.

"We incorporate the fountain in with the fireworks show and make it a total experience," added Jonas.

The fireworks show goes off without a hitch because the entire thing is computerized. With a press of a button, the fireworks, music, and lights begin.

The show begins at 10 p.m. sharp on Saturday, August 4 at 101 N. Harbor Drive. If you want a great seat, you'll have to claim it early. You can reserve your spot with blankets starting at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 3.
