DNR creates survey for public to give input on future of Silver Lake State Park

The DNR wants to hear from you through an online survey.

OCEANA COUNTY, Mich. — What would you like to see at Silver Park State Park?

A survey is now open for the public to provide input on what changes they want to see at the Park within the next 10 to 20 years.

The DNR says the survey will help establish "long-range planning and management strategies that protect the resources of state parks, while addressing recreation and education needs and opportunities."

Silver Lake State Park is home to nearly 3 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, 2,000 acres of sand dunes, a modern campground, a day-use area, a boating access site and the popular 450-acre Silver Lake ORV Area. Fat-tire bicycling and horseback riding seasons take place in the winter months.

Park management plan administrator, Debbie Jensen says this updated plan will replace the park's Phase 1 general management plan completed in 2012.

"A lot has changed since then. And so we wanted to update the plan and obviously, want to  to hear what people have to say, you know, what they like, what they don't like, so that we can be responsive to the park visitors," said Jensen.

Questions like how often, what season and what recreational uses visitors use the park for are asked in the survey.

"We've had 4,000 responses to the survey so far, which is huge. The most of any of them that I've done for any state parks. And there's questions in there that relate to not just the RV area but also the lighthouse and day use area, you know, there's a lot of different interests that are represented here. So we'd like to hear from all of our different users," said Jensen.

The survey is open until March 3rd and the link can be found here.
