EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The developers behind the resurgence of Breton Village are proposing a new mixed-use project in the core of the Gaslight Village.
Gaslight Investors, LLC wants to build on that development success to bring new residential, retail, and parking space as well as add more connectivity to the Reeds Lake Trail to the area.
The investors own an underdeveloped property at the 2255 Wealthy site and at 515 Lakeside that will be used for the proposed project to construct five new multi-story buildings and a new internal road.
If approved, the project would bring about 55,000 square feet of new commercial space, 166 new rental units and 14 townhomes on the undeveloped property. This area was zoned for mixed development use in 2004 and has largely been undeveloped, project leaders said.
“This district has become a community gathering place, enhancing the charm of Gaslight Village and helping make this a truly wonderful place to shop, dine, work and visit,” said Gaslight Investors partner Scott Wierda. “We see tremendous potential to build on that success, bringing in distinctive residential properties and expanding retail, restaurants and service offerings right here in our community.”
Here are some main project goals:
- A new internal road will connect Wealthy Street to Lakeside.
- New snow-melted sidewalks, site lighting, landscaping, and art will be installed to provide a great pedestrian aesthetic experience.
- Five new multi-story street lined buildings will be constructed along the internal road, including 3-4 mixed-use buildings containing both commercial and residential uses.
- One new building will be dedicated to commercial and professional uses.
- 14 new three-story townhomes with private garages will be built along Lakeside.
- Removal of the existing parking deck makes way for the new buildings and the internal road. Current onsite parking will be replaced with a new parking deck as well as increased onsite street parking.
“This is our home, so we’re very sensitive to the needs and desires of the community,” Wierda said. “This project will expand on the tremendous momentum that we’re seeing throughout the greater Grand Rapids area.”
The East Grand Rapids Planning Commission plans to have a preliminary review of this proposal on Tuesday, June 11. Developers expect the plan to be formally reviewed in the coming months.
