HOLLAND, Mich. — There is two weeks left of our School Spirit Challenge, making sure all West Michigan children have a present under the tree this Christmas.
One school is joining in on the challenge this year for the first time, thanks to one student who heard about it from 13 ON YOUR SIDE.
James French, a student at Vanderbilt Charter Academy, is dedicated to helping other children in the community.
“I heard their kids who families can't afford presents. And I was like, 'That's just wrong! Every kid should have something under the tree to open,'” said French.
James and his mom watch 13 ON YOUR SIDE every morning, and that's where he learned about the 'School Spirit Challenge.'
“I watched the news, like a lot. And I saw the school spirit challenge, like every year, and I was like, that'd be fun to do,” said French.
He says he wanted to join last year but missed the deadline.
"This year, we got it," said French.
Now James and his principal Jeff Groggel are beginning a new tradition at the school, encouraging other students to participate by setting rewards when more toys are donated.
Some rewards Mr. Groggel might not even know about.
"I even snuck in a challenge for everybody…. 50 toys… we get to splat Mr. Groggel in the face with the pie," said French.
Mr.Groggel says that reward was a surprise but he is happy to do it for the great cause James started.
“James, I just want to thank you so much for signing Vanderbilt up as A Toys For Tots drop-off location because your passion to help other kids is why we are here at school,” said Groggel.
Every time a toy is added in the box, James says he knows he did the right thing.
“It makes me feel like I'm supported and people have my back," said French.
