GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Less than two weeks ago, Hurricane Helene made landfall on Florida's Gulf coast, with deadly flooding impacts felt in the Carolinas and beyond.

Florida is again bracing for another massive storm with Hurricane Milton

Organizations like the American Red Cross are offering up disaster response in multiple states in Helene's aftermath, and plan to continue helping after Milton hits.

"We are racing against the clock just to ensure that we have our volunteers ready, that we have those shelters staffed and those relief supplies ready to go. We also have a fleet of vehicles and a warehouse full of supplies across the country that are also ready to support after impact," Red Cross Regional Disaster Officer Latoysa Rooks said.

About 66 Michigan volunteers are deployed right now in the south, with five disaster response vehicles serving Florida, Tennessee and North Carolina communities.

The group of Michiganders volunteering is among the largest deployed across all Red Cross regions.

"If the people from Michigan are seeing this, the Red Cross really needs your help. This type of tragedy can affect anywhere in the country, and we're all here together and doing it together, working as one. That's what we do as American citizens," volunteer Harold West said.

How You Can Help

Financial donations for Hurricane Helene enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from this disaster. Visit redcross.org to make a donation.

Give Blood

The Red Cross is working to restock critically needed blood products after the cancellation of blood drives across the Southeast, causing more than 2,500 blood donations to go uncollected. Those outside the affected areas are encouraged to schedule a blood donation appointment now by visiting Home Page or using the Blood Donor App to help restock the shelves.
