LOWELL, Mich. — The Kent County Youth Fair kicked off today in Lowell. The Grand Agricultural Center of West Michigan is the new home for the fair this year.
Organizers say this change is a big step in the right direction for the fair, "It's overwhelming and very thrilling to be at the new location here…. it's been a lot of years in the works by a lot of people to come together to get this facility for the kids ready," said Dairy Superintendent, Renee McCauley.
Many children in Kent County have shown animals at the fair for several years and say they feel the same excitement as they get ready to show the community animals they have prepared for the big week ahead.
Event participant Simon Vanderwey says, "It's fun to be here with our animals that we've like gotten to train throughout the year."
And those participating in the event encourage others who want to learn the skills to reach out.
"There's a lot of people who are willing to help you, like find an animal and connect to with other groups or people who are knowledgeable,” sheep shower Shea Vanderway said.
If you’re on the fence about going out to the fair, organizers encourage the community to support local kids and their animals.
“These kids are really proud of their projects. They love what they do, and they love sharing what they do with others. So I think you should come out and visit these kids," says McCauley. "Ask them a little bit about their projects because they really wanted one share in there. Everybody is excited to be here. And we really just want to share it with community.”
The youth fair runs through Saturday. There will be shows, live music, and carnival rides.
