GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — A quick question was turned into a dream come true.
"I went home and I said, Hey, do you want to buy a record store? And she said yes," said co-owner of "Off the Record" Benji Stone.
Benji and his wife Angie, both from Michigan, went out and explored later in life but found their way back home.
"It's a really driving force for both of us to make a positive impact on this community," said Benji.
The shop has been part of Grand Haven for nearly 14 years, with each owner adding their own improvements along the way.
"This room was kind of just underutilized. It was $1 record bin, it was cold, it was teal, I just wanted a space where I could hang out. And I was like, What do I have to offer? So I thought I could make delicious coffee and tea and just hang out," said Angie.
They say making a safe, judgment-free space for all was top priority.
"I'm trying to have every single type of music that you can possibly have. Like, it's, I don't judge anybody. Come on in here, meet us talk, you don't have to buy anything we give away free high fives and hugs are all about that, " said Benji.
And if you can't make it to Grand Haven, soon you can bring the sounds of the shop home to you.
"We're going to be doing a lot of live shows this summer we're going to be we already did off the record recordings with Jesse ray in the Carolina catfish they came in and we did a free show .. It was recorded live by third Coast recording .. and they recorded in our mastering the show right now. So that's going to start off the record recordings. We're going to have that on Apple Music, Spotify," said Benji.
Other days they say to keep in mind are April 19 and 20. On the April 19, they say it will be a big weekend at the store to welcome Taylor Swift's newest album and on April 20 big sales will hit the shop to celebrate "record store day".
The shop is located on 1114 Washington Ave, Grand Haven.
