KENT COUNTY, Mich — A candlelight vigil to remember and honor victims of violent crime will be held in Grand Rapids on Wednesday.
Silent Observer and the Kent County Prosecutor’s Victim Witness Unit are organizing the vigil which will take place at the 63rd District Court on April 24 at 6 p.m.
Organizers say that the vigil is to help surviving family members with community healing a hope for a more peaceful future.
“This time during Crime Victims’ Rights Week, when we get to be with community and those we serve, is always so powerful," said Angelica Ferrer, Victim Witness Coordinator for the Kent County Prosecutors Office. “We generally only see victims or surviving family members for court hearings, where the focus is on the defendant. This is a time we get to hold a space just for victims and how much they continue to be loved. I know it means a lot to the families we serve that their loved ones are remembered.”
The event is open to anyone who would like to attend. Remarks will be given by Kent County Sherriff Michelle LaJoye-Young, Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker and Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom.
A ceremony announcing the names of victims who were lost to violence in the last year will follow the remarks.
