Muskegon needs more firefighters. Here's how they hope to recruit them

With a new contract negotiated with the city and union, the department is offering positions with higher wages, benefits and more time off to attract new employees.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — The City of Muskegon is looking to hire new firefighters for its department.

To attract applicants, the City worked with the firefighter's union to come up with a new contract that included higher wages, benefits, more time off and more.

"It's been a while since our firefighters have been whole," said Tim Kozal, public safety director for Muskegon. "Comparatively, to other cities here in southwest Michigan."

In the recent past, the City has partnered with Muskegon Heights to provide enough fire response coverage in the area.

The advertised starting base pay for the new positions is $64,367. Year four is increased to $89,808.

There is also health insurance, dental and vision coverage, paid family leave, holiday pay, PTO and an on-site fitness trainer among benefits.

"We've been investing in the actual team by getting them the equipment that they need, new truck, new engine," said Kozal. "We have another truck coming top-end equipment. We're trying to do our best to make sure that we're providing them the equipment they need to provide the exemplary service that their citizens expect."

The department is looking to hire two open positions at the moment, with an application deadline of September 6. However, Kozal said they hope to add an additional three positions within the year.

"Right now, we're trying to at least have two on an engine, when we should have three, the optimum of being four," said Kozal. "We also need to grow to meet the growth of our city. Muskegon has grown exponentially over the last eight to 12 years, not only commercially, but residential, and we have a lot more that's in queue over the next couple years. So, we have to grow with them to provide the service as our calls for service grow."

Devin Brock is one of the newest firefighters in the department, closing in on two years.

"I'm proud to be part of this," said Brock about the department. "When they say it's a brotherhood, we really get to see that here."

Kozal said they are looking for hardworking, high-quality men and women ready to serve the people of Muskegon.
