Massive pothole in Grand Haven fits entire recliner chair

Potholes are an ongoing issue for roads across West Michigan, but this one in the Grand Haven area is gaining a lot of attention online.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — Potholes are an ongoing issue for roads across West Michigan, but those in Grand Haven have to worry about dodging one that can fit a recliner.

Located just off North Beacon Boulevard near Applebee's in Grand Haven lies a massive pothole you can't miss.

"This is a little… This is outrageous," said Grand Haven resident Cory Denny. "I went to Applebee's to go to lunch yesterday. And I drove past it. And obviously, you can't really miss it. And I just thought it was funny. And everyone was talking about it there. And I was like, I'm just going to take a picture in it and posted to Grand Haven Informed and it just blew up a little bit.”

The chair sits right in the middle of businesses, and restaurants. Denny said this pothole is well known to those in the community.

"On my Facebook posts, there were several people that had said that it's been here for almost 10 years," Denny said.

And while there have been efforts to fill the hole, they never last for long.

"Sometimes it gets filled in with something or other but it always ends up turning into this massive crater,” Denny said.

Although, nothing has been quite as effective as the recliner.

"It's hard to run over a chair,” Denny said.

The chair is causing some laughs and jokes online, but Denny said the pothole could cause serious damage to a vehicle.

"Especially if it was that night and it's filled with water. We've been getting a lot of rain and stuff. So yeah, it's kind of funny, but at the same time, it's definitely someone who is probably upset with the situation that nothing's being done so they're doing something," Denny said.

It’s unknown who dropped off the recliner, but Correy said he’s glad that person did something since there's no real solution on the horizon.

"I think that they're a little bit of a hero, because something needs to be there. So it stands out, you know," Denny said. "The city says that it's not their property, and that it's better this is private property. But no one wants to claim it. No one wants to take responsibility for it. Let's just do better Grand Haven.”

Due to it being a weekend 13 On Your Side has not been able to confirm with the city who is ultimately responsible for fixing the road.
