GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — West Michiganders have many options when it comes to staying home for spring break, from events on the lakeshore to casinos and resorts. There are also plenty of activities downtown Grand Rapids next week. There’s something for everyone.
“There’s many ways to go enjoy both the outdoors and the great indoors of West Michigan without breaking the bank,” Dan Sippel, executive director with West Michigan Tourist Association said.
Looking for something to do for spring break? Look no further than what’s possible in Pure Michigan. According to the WMTA, more than two million hotel rooms were booked in Kent County in 2023, adding up to $258 million, up $10 million from 2022. “Staycations” have become a first resort for many as an economic and budget-friendly way to enjoy time with family and friends.
“I think staycations they’re good, it's always good to get out the house, go somewhere a little far but not that far, like a 30-minute drive,” Joshua Alejo said. It’s also good to get out of the state and have fun. It's more difficult being out of the state than just being half an hour away from home.”
WMTA expects to see Michiganders enjoying their spring break not too far from their front door. With so many recreational activities with warmer weather in the forecast, the executive director said there’s no need to hop on a plane.
“Many people actually make it a true staycation and leave their home, go stay in a local hotel that has a pool with lots of amenities and the kids can run a bit,” Sippel said. "You can then take advantage of exactly where they're at, whether they're in Holland, or Kalamazoo or a little further north of here.”
Even with staycations being a cost-effective option, many are still traveling. Between March 27 and April 8, Disneyland is just one popular destination for many.
I’m going to Disneyland in Anaheim, California for spring break,” Ayden Hayes said. My mom always loved Disneyland, so I said why not go on a trip with her.”
Others said one spot right here in West Michigan is very popular to visit, especially during the summer.
“One of the places that I went to was Grand Haven, a lot this summer,” Alex Forman said. Jumping off the pier is always fun to do, always a lot of people there and you meet new people. There’s nice weather, especially in the summer.”
WMTA has resources on their website to find a vacation near you, 365 days a year.
