WEST OLIVE, Mich. — Grand Haven’s now-famous pothole has gotten so much attention that a pizza party is happening at the now-fixed pothole site, where 10% of sales will go toward the Harbor Humane Society.
The Harbor Humane Society’s director of finance and administration Allison Deters says the shelter is happy to be included in the history of the pothole.
“We felt super honored to be chosen,” said Deters. It wasn't something that we went out and solicited, so when someone just comes to us wanting to do a fundraiser for us, that also makes us feel really warm inside. You know, caring about the animals is the mission, and it really makes us feel like a part of the community.”
Deters says that even though the pothole has been filled, it has made the community realize not everything that appears broken is. She says the pothole getting fixed by the community is an example of the good outcome that happens when people come together. She says this is especially true for animals like Skateboard, one of the friendly dogs they have had since the summer of 2023.
“I think the pothole is a representation of something that may appear broken that has actually brought people a lot of joy when they come together,” Deters said. We kind of compare that to shelter animals who are sometimes seen as broken or unworthy and they're really not and they can bring you a lot of joy.”
Deters says the shelter’s hope, after being included in the pizza party fundraiser, is to have a positive impact on the community.
“As much love as Skateboard gives me, I give him a lot of love back, too, and Harbor likes to be hopefully a beacon in the community and fostering that animal-human bond in Ottawa County and beyond.”
The funds that the animal shelter received from the fundraiser will help with the shelter’s operations.
The pizza party will be hosted by Pizza Parliament and will be held tonight from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 pm.. at the site of the now-fixed pothole in Grand Haven.
