Seven people rescued from overnight fire at Grand Rapids apartment building

It took 40 minutes to put the fire out at a Grand Rapids apartment building Sunday morning.

Seven people were rescued from a second floor balcony early Sunday morning to escape a fire. Everyone else was able to make it out safely.

The call came in just after 1:45 a.m. for a fire on Valleywood Drive SE in Grand Rapids. The building is three stories and holds a dozen apartment units.  The two upper level stories were involved in the fire.

The Grand Rapids Fire Department was assisted by the Kentwood Fire Department in putting out the flames. It took 40 minutes before the fire was declared officially out. It isn't clear yet if the building is a total loss or not.

There were no major injuries, though two people suffered minor injuries.

The Red Cross was brought in to help those who weren't able to spend the night in their own bed.
