HOLLAND, Mich. — Police are searching for two individuals who are accused of impersonating a utility worker, entering a 91-year-old man's home and robbing him.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department says that the incident occurred on Tuesday, Dec. 12 around 1 p.m. in the 10500 block of Mary Ann St. in Holland Township.
Police say a male told the 91-year-old man he was a utility worker and that he had to come in to his home to check the home's "water for lead." The resident questioned the man about his credentials, but the man said there would be a large fine if he was not let inside.
The fake utility worker then entered the home and pretended to check the water in the resident's home while a second suspect entered the home and stole cash from within a bedroom inside the home, police said.
The two suspects were said to be driving a white pick-up truck with no markings.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department is asking anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office or Silent Observer at 1-877-88-SILENT (745368) or mosotips.com.
The Sheriff's Office is reminding people to be vigilant about identifying scams like these. All public works and utility companies should markings on their vehicles and workers should have proper identification such as lanyards or ID cards.
