Allegan County Sheriff's Office warns of meth bottles

As the weather warms up, the Allegan County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about what they may find outside.

As the weather warms up, the Allegan County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about what they may find outside.

"It could be anywhere," Lt. Brett Ensfield, with the Allegan County Sheriff's Office said. "Typically if someone is out manufacturing meth what we found was no one wanted to keep this stuff around because if we found it that's evidence against them for manufacturing so they'd throw it out in roadways, ditches, and lakes.

Hidden in plain sight, authorities say this is the time of year, many come across soda bottles used to make meth.

"Everybody's walking around picking up garbage and pop bottles for returnables and its high incidents of people coming across this stuff," Ensfield added. "What'd you find is a 20 oz pop bottle, with a hole drilled into the top with a long tube coming out and its going to have a salt mixture in it."

A mixture that could release acid gas which could cause irritation to whatever it touches.

A warning Allegan County resident, Linda Kaylor, is not take lightly.

"I have grandkids now and I'm concerned for them," Kaylor said. "I see a lot of broken families in our area. There's not many of us that don't know someone that isn't affected by the meth epidemic."

The mother and grandmother says she has spoken to her children about it.

"Its scary not only for kids but our community, not everyone you know is wealthy here, and a lot of people do pick up bottles and it's scary."

So if you find yourself coming across, a suspicious bag or bottle police say, do not pick it up.

"Call 911 we'll come out, this is what police officers do," Lt. Ensfield said. "They come out and identify and say yes or no that is a meth waste, you don't want to take it home."

Another reason you do not want to pick these bottles up is because you could be tampering with evidence.
Police say, in the past, they have made arrests from fingerprints and receipts found with the items.
