HILLSDALE, Mich. — The Michigan State Police (MSP) First District posted to X on Thursday that they are investigating a shooting in Hillsdale County.

The initial shooting took place in the area of Beecher Road and Lamb Road.

A Hillsdale deputy was shot during the shooting and brought to a nearby hospital where they were later pronounced dead.

The suspect, identified as Eric Michael Fiddler, was at large for some time. Police posted his photo to X, asking the public to call 911 if they saw him. They described him as armed and dangerous.

MSP said that around 6:15 p.m. they located Fiddler in a field near the intersection of Culbert Road and Osseo Road South.

Members of the MSP Emergency Support Team asked Fiddler to surrender. He instead pulled out a gun and fired at officers. He was hit and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials are withholding the name of the deputy who passed away as they notify family.
