ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. — The Detroit News is reporting that up to ten people were shot at a Detroit-area splash pad on Saturday.
The shooting occurred at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad, located at 1585 E. Auburn Road in Rochester Hills, the Rochester Hills Police Department posted to Facebook.
In the post, the police department said it was an "active shooter situation."
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard spoke to The Detroit News. He told them that shortly after 5 p.m. a "random" gunman got out of a vehicle before firing 28 shots from a handgun into the park.
Bouchard also told The Detroit News that police recovered the handgun and magazines. He also confirmed to them that there were nine or ten total victims.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Department posted to X shortly after 7 p.m. saying the crime scene is still active. They said they also potentially had the suspect "contained" nearby. They asked the public to avoid the area.
Bouchard told The Detroit News that the suspect was contained in a home near the park and that a swat team was being assembled.
"It's a gut punch, obviously, for us here in Oakland County," Bouchard told The Detroit News, referencing the November 2021 deadly mass shooting at Oxford High School. "We've gone through so many tragedies, you know, we're not even fully comprehending what happened at Oxford."
