GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — On Tuesday, the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) announced charges filed against 25-year-old Casey Wynsma in the death of 59-year-old Gregory Vanocker.
Vanocker was left in critical condition after the crash on Sept. 18. He died ten days later from his injuries.
GRPD's investigation showed Wynsma was traveling south in his car when he hit Vanocker, who was riding his motorcycle at the intersection of Leonard Street and Alpine Avenue NW around 1:40 a.m.
Wynsma has been charged with operating while intoxicated, reckless driving causing death and failure to stop at the scene of accident, resulting in death.
Each of the three charges are felonies and carry a maximum sentence of 15 years.
“I hope these charges bring some measure of closure to Gregory’s loved ones,” said GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom. “I don’t know how many times it needs to be said: impaired driving has tragic consequences for individuals, their families, and our community. If you have been drinking or using drugs, do not get behind the wheel.”
