KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A Kent County couple will both serve more than a decade in prison for their roles in abusing a 13-year-old girl in 2022.
William Williams previously pleaded no contest to torture, unlawful imprisonment and two counts of first-degree child abuse.
Williams appeared in court on Monday for a sentencing hearing, and the judge sentenced him to a little over 11 years to 30 years in prison.
The girl's guardian, Wilma Edwards, previously pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse.
In April, a judge handed Edwards a similar sentence of 11 years in prison.
Court documents filed in the case claim the girl's guardian and her boyfriend would both tie the girl to her bed each night with ratchet straps to prevent her from getting out of bed back in August 2022.
Authorities said an investigation was launched into a child abuse case when a local hospital flagged a 13-year-old girl suffering from severe malnourishment and physical injuries.
Child Protective Services (CPS) claims the abuse happened at a home in the 100 block of Fontana Street SE.
