A former East Grand Rapids High Athletic Director is stunned at the arrest of Kelvin Grady.

A former East Grand Rapids High Athletic Director is stunned at the arrest of Kelvin Grady.

Grady is a former University of Michigan and East Grand Rapids athlete. He was arrested on Thursday, March 23.

"He was just incredible, just had an incredible work ethic and a great leader but he also had some skills that were remarkable," former EGR Athletic Director, Scott Robertson, said.

Robertson says he last spoke with Grady just after the 27-year-old graduated from U of M as he was considering coaching.

"You know, he had some goals, a vision of what he wanted to do in the future and it included coaching obviously," Robertson said. "We talked about that and he talked about his desire to have a positive impact on kids throughout the greater Grand Rapids community."

Grady coached the girls basketball team at Forest Hills Central for two years.

"Every indication I had, when I spoke to him, he was headed in a very positive direction and doing a lot of great things, not just for himself, but positively impacting high school kids as well."

Grady was arrested by Grand Rapids police on a violation of the controlled substance act.

The Kent County Prosecutors Office confirms Grady faces:

  • one felony count of conspiracy to deliver manufacture marijuana
  • one misdemeanor count of maintaining a drug house
  • one misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana

"If this was just some great athlete that had gone awry and made some mistakes that may be one thing," Robertson said. "But besides a great athlete, he was also, every interaction I had with him a great kid, so that's what makes this so shocking."

The Kent County Prosecutors office alleges Grady was working with another man, Marquis Dante Turley. Turley faces charges of delivering and manufacturing marijuana as well as maintaining a drug house.

Turley has been released from the Kent County Jail but according to the jail's website, as of Thursday night, Grady still remained in custody.
