STANDOFF RESOLVED | GRPD surrounds home during felony warrant search Thursday afternoon

Authorities worked to get the 35-year-old man to exit the home on the city's south side for more than two hours.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A search warrant effort turned into a standoff Thursday afternoon on Grand Rapids' south side.

Grand Rapids Police said the ordeal started around 1:40 p.m. at a home in the 1700 block of Newark Southeast near Kalamazoo Avenue SE.

Law enforcement was executing a search warrant related to drugs and guns. The man inside was believed to be a 35-year-old. Captain Terry Dixon of GRPD called the warrant a "surround and call out".

"We surround the house and then we ask and give commands like you're hearing in the background to come out, so that is surround and call out."

Officers used loudspeakers to try to coax the person to come out.

"Most of the time they just come out so we don't have this kind of reaction to it," said Dixon. "But in this particular case, that individual has refused to respond to us, which brings about this reaction that you see before you."

Eventually, the man came out of the home with his hands on his head. Police have not released his identity.
