Grand Rapids truck driver charged in U.S. 131 fatality

A Grand Rapids truck driver will be back in court next week to face charges in a work-zone accident along U.S. 131 near Cadillac on Feb. 8  that killed one worker and injured another.

CADILLAC, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Grand Rapids truck driver will be back in court next week to face charges in a deadly work-zone accident Monday on U.S. 131 that killed one worker and injured another.

Scott Allen McCant, 42, was arraigned this week for reckless driving causing death, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. It is the first work-related fatality in Michigan this year.

McCant, who lives on the city's Northeast Side, will be in Cadillac District Court on Tuesday for a probable cause hearing. He is free on a $2,500 bond.

The crash happened near the northbound U.S. 131 off-ramp to M-115 in Wexford County’s Clam Lake Township. A work crew was erecting a blue road sign listing accommodations off the Cadillac exit when the accident occurred, according to the Wexford County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators say the semi-tractor trailer drifted over the solid white line on the road’s shoulder, striking the worker’s utility truck. It was equipped with a trailer sporting a lighted caution arrow beside the road. Crew members were wrapping up the sign work when they were struck.

The impact killed 45-year-old Sean Jordan of Holly and injured a second worker, Daniel Moomwa of Troy. Moomwa was released from a Grand Rapids hospital on Tuesday.

McCant’s commercial driving license is up to date; he has one driving citation from Sept. 2004, according to the Michigan Secretary of State. The Ionia County citation was for driving 65 mph in a 55 mph zone.

“They were out doing a job,’’ Wexford County Sheriff’s deputy Arjay Schopieray told WWTV/WWUP-TV 9 & 10 News. “They were putting up new signs to gas stations or food.

“This is a very bizarre accident because of the facts,’’ Schopieray said. “You usually don’t see construction workers in the wintertime on the side of the road, working on signs or doing road construction.’’
