Person hospitalized in Grand Rapids shooting dies from injuries

Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said he believes this was most likely a targeted act.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A man sent to the hospital with grave injuries has died.

The Grand Rapids Police Department was investigating in the area of 10th Street and Turner Avenue. Authorities confirmed there was an adult man taken to the hospital for treatment.

There is a large police presence in that area, and intersections near the scene are blocked off.

Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said the shooting happened in a somewhat secluded area just before 2 p.m.

The assailants fired multiple rounds at the man who was in the driver's seat of a car, police said. The victim drove away and then crashed, police said.

He suffered significant injuries and died at the hospital on Sept. 11.

"Sounds like the shooters were in a separate vehicle that fled the area," GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom said, "Preliminarily, it's looking like this is crime-related, maybe drug-related."

"We have a somewhat large scene. The victim is shot while they're in the vehicle, he drove away and then crashed the vehicle, so we have an extensive scene," Winstrom said explaining the large number of law enforcement in the area.

Detectives are now canvassing the area to talk to potential witnesses, comb for evidence and check for surveillance video that could help them track down the suspect.

Law enforcement doesn't yet have suspect information that they're ready to share with the public, but did indicate the violence was most likely a targeted incident.

"I do believe there is a really good chance the victim and the shooter knew each other," Winstrom said.

"I would say it is pretty brazen," Winstrom said. "One of my biggest fears is we get a random shooting... That doesn't appear to be the case here."
