GAINES, Mich. — Two people are in custody after driving away from police after a traffic stop in Gaines Township.

The traffic stop was initiated a little after 4 p.m. on Saturday near South Division Avenue and Green Meadow Street, the Kent County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) said.

A KCSO deputy said they observed "abnormal movements by the driver" before they pulled the car over. The deputy also said that the car didn't stop right away and drove for a short distance.

Additional KCSO deputies arrived to assist and placed spike strips under the stopped car after arriving.

KCSO said that the car then sped off and a brief pursuit happened before the car stopped and the 23-year-old male driver ran from the car. Deputies caught the male and took him into custody and also arrested a 20-year-old female who was a passenger in the car and did not run.

When the car was searched, KCSO said they found "a significant amount of marijuana, a scale, packaging materials, a large sum of cash, and a loaded Glock 10mm pistol."
