ID=71023256IONIA, Mich. (WZZM) -- A corrections officer is recovering after being knocked unconscious by a prisoner Thursday morning.

Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz told WZZM 13 the assault happened around 10 o'clock at the Michigan Reformatory in Ionia. The prisoner hit the officer in the back of the head strongly enough to knock him out.

The officer woke back up at the scene, but paramedics did take him to a hospital for observation.

The prisoner, a male, was placed into segregation, Gautz said, per policy and pending the ongoing investigation. That investigation will also help determine whether any charges will be filed.

Gautz couldn't immediately say what the circumstances were leading up to the incident, as they're still being investigated.
