Kent County Sheriff's Office, FBI investigating suspected swatting calls

The caller advised of an anonymous subject who was threatening Rockford Public School's Belmont Elementary.

KENT COUNTY, Mich. — Swatting calls are once again targeting Kent County, the Sheriff's Office (KCSO) says.

The KCSO says they received a call from the crisis hotline around 2 p.m. Monday. The caller advised of an anonymous subject who was threatening Rockford Public School's Belmont Elementary.

The threat mentioned an explosive device. According to authorities, the KCSO School Resource Officer and patrol staff arrived quickly and helped bring the children to the Plainfield Township Offices for safety.

Authorities said they had the school searched and cleared within an hour with help from deputies and their explosives detection K9.

The KCSO said this is the fourth suspected "swatting" call they have received since Sunday. In total, they received one in Grand Rapids Township and three in Plainfield Township over the course of the two days.

So far, authorities said, the calls have all been unfounded. However, the KCSO said this causes a "significant disruption" to the Kent County community, and they will be taking all necessary precautions.

The KCSO is looking into the calls with help from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Grand Rapids Office.
