ROCKFORD, Mich. — The Kent County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) is investigating a string of vehicle thefts in the Rockford area.
In total, four vehicles were stolen. Police say this is a continuation of vehicle thefts the KCSO has investigated involving multiple suspects and reckless driving.
The incident began at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, when a resident reported their Ford SUV stolen from the area of Surf Drive NE. The resident said the tracking app in his vehicle showed it may be in the area of Camino Del Ray Drive in Cannon Township.
Deputies moved to the Bella Vista neighborhood where they found several vehicles traveling together, including the stolen Ford SUV.
A team of two deputies began pursuing the vehicles. One followed the stolen SUV, while another team pursued three other vehicles driving recklessly in that same neighborhood.
Police say they lost visual contact on all four vehicles.
Later, the Ford SUV was located in the 1000 block of Caufield SW in Grand Rapids. Another vehicle reported stolen, a Chevy Silverado, was found in Kalamazoo unoccupied.
Police were also notified of a group of teens in face masks attempting to use stolen credit cards to purchase items, before fleeing in a Dodge Durango prior to the deputies' arrival.
Around that time, a fourth vehicle, a Lincoln Navigator, from the area of Decosta Drive was reported stolen.
The Lincoln and Dodge Durango remain missing at this time. It is believed that all four stolen vehicles were involved in the original pursuit.
Police say all vehicles had common factors, like keys and cash left in the vehicles.
Investigators are still working on the case as of Wednesday morning.
