GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Multiple surveillance cameras appear to be key to helping Grand Rapids Police detectives track down a 29-year-old accused of a December 2022 homicide.

Keyante Newbern is facing four charges related to the killing, including the charge of homicide - open murder. He also faces a CCW charge, a felony in possession of a firearm charge and a felony firearm charge.

Mya Kelly, 23, was shot and killed inside a home on Canton St. SW in Grand Rapids around 10 p.m. on Dec. 26, 2022.

Probable cause documents filed in the case say the suspect fired multiple shots through the front door, killing Kelly as her two small children were in the living room.

Detectives said Newbern was seen hours before the shooting making a rap video with the same gun used in the crime.

“Any death by homicide in our city is tragic, but the murder of Mya Kelly in her home, in front of her young children, is a truly heinous act,” said Chief Eric Winstrom. “I commend the GRPD Major Case Team detectives for their perseverance in bringing justice for Mya’s loved ones.”

He's expected to be back in court on Feb. 15.
