Man charged for vandalism of Grand Rapids Candied Yam

Darda Lee Brooks was arrested in connection to the incident after a witness told police she saw him smashing windows at the restaurant.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A man has been arrested in connection to the vandalism of the Candied Yam just before midnight on Friday.

Just before 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, the shop's staff became aware of what had happened thanks to community members who noticed the vandalism. Two doors and six windows had been broken.

Darda Lee Brooks has been arrested in connection to the incident after a witness told police she saw him smashing windows in the restaurant. After she called, police found Brooks walking in the area and detained him. The witness confirmed to police he was the man she had seen.

Police also watched surveillance footage that showed Brooks throwing a brick through the windows of the restaurant. During interviews, police said he admitted to the crime.

Brooks was arrested and remains in jail for a charge of Malicious Destruction of Building - $1,000 or more but less than $20,000.
