Man shot by GRPD in December now faces new charge of attempted murder after getting out on bail

The man who charged at Grand Rapids police in December with a box cutter and was shot is now facing new charges in an unrelated incident.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The man who was shot by Grand Rapids police for charging at them with a box cutter in December is facing an attempted murder charge for an unrelated incident.

Nodin Chervenka, 20, is facing six new charges in relation to an assault of a man outside of his apartment in Grand Rapids.

Prior to this latest incident, Chervenka was shot two times by Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) officers in December.

Two GRPD officers responded to a "trouble with a person" call on the 200 block of Union Avenue NE. Chervenka was seen on police body camera footage telling officers that he had a box cutter and charging at them.

Chervenka was eventually taken into custody and the officers were later cleared of any wrongdoing by a Michigan State Police investigation.

Chervenka was charged with one count of felonious assault and two counts of resisting and opposing an officer.

Chervenka posted bond, which was set at $500, on Jan. 24. After being released from custody, Chervenka allegedly assaulted a man outside of his apartment in Grand Rapids three weeks later.

Court documents say that the incident happened on Thursday, Feb. 15 around 8:40 p.m. at the Delaware Heights Apartments in Grand Rapids.

GRPD officers made contact with the victim, a man in a wheelchair, and found him bloody and swollen. Police say that he had a stab wound on his back, his right eye was dripping blood, his face and head were swollen, and he had drag marks on his side.

Investigators uncovered surveillance video from a hallway camera where the incident happened. The court document says that the video shows the six minutes of time when the incident took place.

The video allegedly shows Chervenka roll the victim's wheelchair to a location that prevents him from entering his apartment. The video surveillance allegedly caught the suspect stabbing the victim three or four times, choking the victim, sawing at the victim's neck with the knife, and then kicking the victim on the ground at least 10 times.

After the victim was assaulted, he was able to describe the suspect to police with help from a witness. The GRPD officers on scene left the apartment building and went outside to find Chervenka.

When officers found Chervenka, he told them that he had a knife and put his hand in his pocket and charged at the three officers.

The GRPD officers were able to give Chervenka space by backing up and giving commands. Chervenka eventually followed the officers commands and went to the ground where police were able to take him into custody.

Chervenka was charged with assault with the intent to murder, torture, assault with intent to great bodily harm, and three charges of resisting arrest.

Chervenka will be in court for a probable cause conference on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 9 a.m. He is currently in custody with a bond set at $750,000.
