GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A man armed with wooden sticks attacked two nurses outside Mary Free Bed earlier this week.

That's according to the Grand Rapids Police Department, who said the unprovoked assault happened around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The suspect swung wooden sticks at the women, striking one in the face, and one in the hand as she tried to block her face.

Both women were hurt. One of the nurses did seek treatment, GRPD said.

Detectives identified the suspect and took him into custody.

He faces a felonious assault charge, and police said this man has exhibited aggressive behavior in prior police contacts.

We reached out to Mary Free Bed, and they shared this statement:

"Unfortunately, while two staff members were on break outside of the hospital overnight, they were approached and assaulted by an unknown person.

Both of our team members are safe and doing OK. Our security department is collaborating with the Grand Rapids Police Department as they identify and charge the suspect.

The safety of our staff is of the utmost importance, and we are using this unfortunate incident to remind our teams about safety precautions we can all take when we are off campus."
